Metatarsal Problems and How We Can Help

There are several different bones that make up the foot and each area can experience different issues and need different types of treatments. One area of the foot are the metatarsals. These are the long bones that connect your ankles to your toes. There are many problems that you could deal with in this area and it’s important to understand what needs to be treated. Your podiatrists at Chestnut Hill Podiatry Associates in Philadelphia and Huntingdon Valley, PA, can explain common metatarsal problems and how they’re treated.

Common Metatarsal Problems and Their Treatments

One common form of metatarsal problems that your podiatrists deal with is known as metatarsalgia. This is a condition where the ball of the foot becomes painful and inflamed. It often occurs when you participate in activities that involve running and jumping constantly. The most common way to treat this is with rest and icing your feet. You may need to change your footwear and use inserts to absorb shock.

Another common issues in the metatarsals is Morton’s neuroma. This is often caused by a pinched nerve in between the third and fourth toe. You may need to tape the area off as well as rest and ice the foot. You also might need to use a brace to help ease some of the pain. Your podiatrist might also recommend physical therapy to strengthen the foot and ease some of the pain you’re experiencing.

Your doctor could also recommend using a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug to help ease some of the pain of both of these common issues.
